As you may have observed, I've designed most lessons and examples on this website for use on the Moodle platform. However, I've also created courses using Articulate Storyline and Rise, DAZ and Blender 3D, mainly for internal work or based on client requests. Therefore, a few months ago, I started working on a fun project using Storyline and 2.5D, and the alpha version of the game is available free via Moodle: https://petalonline.moodlecloud.com/ (login as guest enabled). Note: I removed some animations to speed up the load time.

I also submitted an abstract based on the project entitled 'Using game-based eLearning to Build Resilience to Natural Hazards' in response to a call from the Tenth Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning (PCF10). The full peer-reviewed paper is available via the Commonwealth of Learning Oasis platform: https://oasis.col.org

The game features a male character called Gavin and a female character (her name is Amy) and has four levels, ranging from Level 1 Hurricanes to Level 4 Volcanoes. It includes text, images, animation, voice-over, music, sound effects, and closed captioning. Players can mouse over each hazard to hear a sound effect and select Gavin or Amy to listen to an introduction to the game. Each level begins with knowledge sharing, specifically, a definition of each hazard, its features, the damages it may cause, and the mitigation steps that should be taken.

The last part of each knowledge-sharing component is a list of keywords associated with a specific hazard and encouragement to players to find out more and communicate with their teacher, family, and friends about what they've learned and the steps that should be taken. This research and collaboration activity is part of the game's blended approach to game-based learning.

Each level also includes two knowledge checks as a quiz, drag-and-drop activity, puzzle, or maze. The last scene includes links to sites containing disaster facts and additional information about preparedness. Other updates are in store to make interaction with the characters more touch-responsive and allow offline access.
