In August 2015, I planned to include an interpreter and closed caption in my next welcome to students around the same month in the following year. Fast-forward to February 2016, I've had to pause my plans temporarily and switch gears.
On short notice I was able to prepare a video introduction with very limited resources (mobile phone, a white cloth as the background and iMovie for editing) and was still able to achieve the objectives that is, to welcome students, relay contact information and to offer some guidelines.
After my first attempt using the cell phone to record the new welcome, I'm now considering improving the background lighting, connecting an external microphone and maybe I will be able to use a similar, yet improved approach for the planned recording in August. I made do with what was available and might actually use it again. The findings from an empirical study by Philip et al (2014) noted that "Videos produced with a more personal feel could be more engaging than high-fidelity studio recordings." Therefore, it might not be necessary to attempt a studio recording as the one in my Welcome Video dated August 21, 2015 (admittedly, the audio quality in the studio production was better).
