As you may have noticed, my e-portfolio is on a free Wix site,, and prior to June 2017 if you had enquired about my preference, I would mention Wix, mainly because it requires no coding experience and is aesthetically appealing. Fast forward to August 2017, I've learned a bit about coding in Moodle, a free and open source software, and I’m moving full steam ahead with a Human Resource (HR) intranet using another open source option.

So what caused this shift/willingness to try another option? Simply put, I was asked to consider it, given my comfort with Moodle and InkScape. I had expressed an interest in designing an HR intranet, following which my ICT colleague recommended a content management system (CMS) that may be better suited to my needs due to the various plugins and security features. Therefore, I spent a weekend reading, learning and experimenting with the software, and within two days, I developed proficiency in WordPress.

In less than 3 months, the private site was designed and launched, and the following were in place:

  • a Learning Management System (LMS) with course overview information, videos and links to: 38 free online courses through a responsive accordion; 8 face-to-face courses; 11 professional development courses; 31 direct credit courses; 9 scholarships and an iframe training schedule.

  • 2 bespoke online e-courses, assessments (confirmation and notifications) and e-certificates.

  • Tabs and widgets: Resources (policies, forms, guides, idea share), e-directory, announcements, shout outs, e-buttons, login and gravatar.

  • Online Human Resource and Performance Management module: General Information tab, employee/employment status, job info, performance (review, comments, goals).

Prior to the site launch, an e-invitation was sent out to staff, banners were designed and the training material package was in keeping with the colour scheme and learning and development theme. Based on requests from co-workers and with the input of my ICT colleague, we've included a project management and leave tracking component and recently implemented an inventory management system while continuing to look for ways to enhance the site.
